Siege Mode Guide – Call the Horde to Your Own Base
Blood moon only comes once a week. With siege mode you can test your base whenever you want – and get paid for every zombie you kill. This guide explains the tiers, how waves work, how the war chest pays out and how to survive a Nightmare siege.
What is siege mode?
Siege mode is a NASTY Z feature that sends waves of zombies to your own land claim on demand. You choose a tier, the server announces the attack, and wave after wave arrives from a different side of your base. Every kill pays the player who made it, and if your base holds until the last wave you collect the war chest.
You start a siege from the NASTY Z APP (Play → Siege) or with the chat command /siege <tier> while you stand inside your land claim.
The four siege tiers
| Tier | Waves | Stake | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout | 5 | free | Testing a new base |
| Soldier | 7 | 1,000 dukes | Mid-game bases |
| Veteran | 10 | 3,000 dukes | Strong horde bases |
| Nightmare | 12 | 6,000 dukes | Endgame fortresses and groups |
The stake is returned when you win (twice!) and lost if your base falls. A victory pays roughly 10k / 30k / 70k / 140k dukes depending on the tier, and no siege pays more than 150,000 dukes.
How a siege plays out
1. Preparation
After you start a siege you get a few minutes of preparation. Scouts reveal which side the first wave will come from – the app shows it on a radar and you get whispers in game. Changed your mind? Call it off during preparation and you get your stake back.
2. Waves
Each wave attacks from one side of your base, and the final wave comes from all sides. The wave type changes as you go:
- Horde waves – the normal mix of zombies for your tier
- Runners – every third wave, fast and aggressive
- Hounds – every fourth wave, zombie dogs that rush weak spots
- Bosses – every fifth wave and the final wave
Zombies spawn outside your claim and most of them head straight for the base.
3. Breaks and the war chest
Between waves you get a short break. The next side and wave type are announced, and you decide: bank the war chest now with /siege bank and end the siege safely, or keep going for a bigger payout.
4. Lives
Your group shares 3 lives. You lose one when a defender dies, when a wave is not cleared in time, or when everybody leaves the base. Lose all three and the base has fallen: you keep half of the war chest but lose the stake.
Rewards
- Every kill pays instantly – friends who help defend get paid for their kills too.
- Wave bonuses fill the war chest after each cleared wave.
- Victory pays the war chest ×1.5 plus your stake back twice, and adds a trophy to your profile.
- Battle honours: Gatekeeper, Iron Wall, Bastion, Nightmare Conqueror, Last Stand, Untouchable and more – see the battle honours guide.
Rules and limits
- You can only siege your own land claim and you must stand inside it to start.
- Maximum two sieges on the server at the same time, at least 300 m apart.
- No sieges during the blood moon.
- After a siege there is a cooldown of 12 hours per base owner. You can buy off the rest of the cooldown with dukes (
/siege skip), up to twice per day. - If the server restarts during a siege, your war chest is banked automatically.
Tips to win your first Nightmare siege
- Test with Scout first. It's free and shows you where zombies break in.
- Kill boxes beat walls. Funnel zombies into a narrow path covered by turrets and your own guns – read our horde base guide.
- Bring friends. Every defender's kills pay them directly and more guns means faster waves.
- Watch the break timer. Use it to repair blocks, reload turrets and decide whether to bank.
- Bank when it's going wrong. A banked chest is guaranteed money; a fallen base only keeps half.
Frequently asked questions
How do I start a siege?
Stand inside your own land claim and use Play → Siege in the NASTY Z APP, or type /siege followed by the tier name in chat.
Can my friends help during a siege?
Yes. Anyone can help defend, and every kill pays the player who made it.
What happens if I die during a siege?
Your group loses one of its three shared lives. When all lives are gone the base has fallen: you keep half the war chest and lose the stake.
How often can I start a siege?
